Box Braids:  This is a cute way to have your hair styled without it getting in the way of your mask. It also keeps your hair out of your face while still looking fabulous.
Braided Crown: This lovely style is similar to the box braids, but it keep your hair up off your neck and completely out of the way

SALONU asks,"Why Style Your Hair During COVID19?"

I feel like a little kid whose been told to,"Go to your room". The new normal feels surreal. Staying at home feels weird. No work, no play, just stay. This is a time where we are feeling scared (no one wants to get sick, lose their business,or job), unsure (what happens next?) and trying to keep upbeat and positive. (Silly jokes, memes, and photos bombard social media).

If we are all hunkered down at home,Why Is everyone worried about their roots coming in and their extensions hanging by a thread? Or their nails looking horrendous? Why worry if your hairstyle is grown out? Because looking good is a huge part of feeling good! When we look good we feel like we can take on anything!  So how do we look good when all the salons are closed?
Now is a great time to play around with hairstyles and to care for your hair and skin. You can do a hair masque easily. Take your deep conditioner and leave it on for 30 minutes, rinse and feel thirsty, winter dry hair rejuvenated. (We didn't always have time for that before). Dig into your bathroom closet and find all those face masques that you've been wanting to use. Put oil around your cuticles and on hands and feet to hydrate dry skin (use coconut oil or olive oil). What to do about scary roots? Look for all those eye shadow palettes you've been collecting and find a color close your your hair color. Utilizing  a makeup brush apply shadow to the  regrowth that is visible. This lasts a day or two, or when you next shampoo. This can tied you over for a month. Remember to thoroughly shampoo the shadow off of your scalp. (This was a trick we used to use in the movies, before they had all of those root camouflage products).

Now for fun! This is a time to play with new hairstyles. The three looks pictured on Davina are a fun way to play. The first style her hair is down and dried natural. Next using a small curling iron I took random pieces and defined her beautiful curls, resulting in a more polished look. Get out your hot tools  and experiment!
Picture
Her second look is a quick and easy up sweep that looks great with jeans or an evening dress. I simply pinned up her curls with bobbie pins and let some curls escape for a soft look. Find all of your pins, barrettes, hair ties and headbands and have fun and get creative with them!
Picture
Her final look is playful and fun. I twirled up her curls into knots and pinned them up in a Mohawk fashion. This look is fun for dancing the night away, even at home. So grab a glass of wine, get out your hair styling tools, face time with your friends and host a hair party! Send me your looks, I would love to see your (hair)do's.

100 Year Bob!

4/1/2019

Picture

A classic is timeless - lasting and forever. That may sound a bit redundant, but all of these words describe a haircut that has remained popular for 100 years! The BOB!
Picture
Other words to describe this iconic cut are powerful and precise. This cut has a strong geometric shape and definitely makes a statement.
Picture

How did the BOB haircut get it’s name?

Picture
Where did this haircut originate? How did it get its name? How did it get its name? Historically, in the early 1900s, Western women did not cut their hair. The wore it up. Hence the name "Hairdresser." Hair was dressed up, not cut. To bob off your hair was to cut it. Only young girls, actresses and advanced, fashionable women dared to "bob" off their hair. This style was not considered respectable.
Picture
COCO CHANEL said, "Cut your hair and change your life."

But right around WWI that changed. It was a necessity for women engaged in work in factories during the war. It was unsafe to have long hair that could get caught in machinery.
It is rumored that COCO CHANEL saw a young women walking down a Paris street with her hair BOBBED off and thought it looked smashing, so she headed to a barber and had her hair lopped off!
She is quoted as saying "Cut your hair and change your life."

In the 1920s the “Bob” became all the rage, and lines could be found outside barber shops with women waiting to “bob” off their hair.
Picture
What social significance does the BOB represent?

Picture
Picture

Despite its popularity, it was still considered shocking to cut your hair. Only forward thinking, independent women "bobbed" off their hair. Today, one hundred years later, the bob hairstyle is more popular than ever, and women are speaking their minds.
Picture
Women today feel empowered and strong, just like the bob cut! There are more female role models and we are addressing previously suppressed issues. The “ME TOO” movement created a torrent of women speaking out for the first time. I predict that in 2020, the roaring twenties will return and women will once again roar. A female president? YES! And she will wear a bob!

Blogger Cammie Scott flipped a coin to decide
whether or not to chop!

This Sophisticated look can be sleek and smooth or textured and curled. The versatility makes it the look of the season as we travel into Fall and opt for big comfy sweaters and turtle necks.

How do you know if you are ready to lose precious inches off your long hair? Blogger Cammie Scott flipped a coin. Other celebs decided after too much lightening a change was in order to make hair healthy again.

Emma Stone is showing more texture.
A clean edged bob is a great way to get rid of summers dried balyaged edges that are straggly and ragged.
Picture
I think by now we’ve all got the wavy look bob down, So, how do you get a smooth glass finish? It’s all in the styling. To get that sleek look start with your styling products. Add a leave in conditioning primer, like Framesi Primer 11 or B&B Daytime Protective Repair Fluid. For Blondes we love Framesi Color Lover Dynamic Blonde Serum. Next use a blow dry styling cream like Framesi BY WIO Strait Balm or B&B All Style Blowdry. We like to pair it with an oil, like B&B Hairdressers Invisible Oil or Framesi Stop Frizz.

Next, it’s all in the BRUSH! Use a large paddle brush and blow dry from nape to front up and over your head. This will dry it straight and smooth.
Picture
If your hair is still unruly, tap it with a flat iron midshaft to end (steer clear of the roots if you want to maintain volume).

Finish by lightly topping a blend of your blow dry cream and a touch of oil to keep flyaways at bay and to maintain that sleek, smooth finish.

Any way you style it, wavy, smooth, tousled, this season's Classic Bob feels fresh no matter how you style it.

How to get that glass finish that makes this season's Bob perfection!

How to get Fuller,Stronger, Thicker Hair, Naturally

How to get Fuller, Stronger, Thicker Hair. Naturally.

Picture
There are a lot of reason why hair thins out. STRESS, hormones, diet, illness, pollution, poor grooming habits, improper shampooing and brushing to name a few. But what are the solutions? Here is a list of simple solutions that can help.

First, Identify the Cause
Is it improper shampoo or using the wrong products? Ask your stylist which products work best with your scalp and hair. A lot of shampoos are free of sulfates, but sulfates used properly can really cleanse your scalp, some sulfate-free shampoos may not be getting your scalp as clean as you need it. Especially if you are using a lot of styling products. Dry shampoos give you an extra few days of styling and give your hair a boost at the roots, but they can clog follicles and dull hair and need to be thoroughly removed.

Are you losing an abnormal amount of hair? You normally loose 100 hairs a day. But if you notice excessive shedding call your doctor. You may have an underlying health problem If your hair is falling out more than normal. Remenber some seasons you will shed hair more than normal,so do not be alarmed if your hair falls out more during certain times of the year for a few months. Hair shedding is actually a normal part of the hair growth cycle. It’s the phase where hair comes out so a new one can come through.

Solutions
Clogged follicles can result in thinning hair. If you are cleansing properly but still experience thinning hair, your follicles could be clogged from hormones, dry scalp or oily scalp. Get the follicles unclogged. My favorite shampoo for unclogging follicles is Framesi Morphosis Densifying shampoo. Its natural ingredients, blueberry extract, Vitamin H(Biotin) olive and palm oils, and apple stem cells not only unclog follicles but help with hair growth.
So many great products to help with hair solutions
Bumble and Bumble Scalp detox is also good, with micellar water and a fizzing foam, it feels like pop rocks on your scalp for a squeaky clean scalp.
Picture
Picture
Next VITAMINS and healthy diet. I love Framesi Densifying Extreme drops, they go right on your scalp, where you need it! Blueberry, propolis and royal jelly along with Biotin, for hair bulb metabolism.

There are a lot of home remedies too, like honey, coconut and olive oils and even mashed avocado. My personal favorite is castor oil. It works on a lot of scalp issues.

These are pretty messy and time consuming, I prefer the easy way out. Especially when there are so many good products with natural ingredients. But if you have time and feel like cooking up a home remedy, then do it!

I also find that home remedies can be expensive. Mashing organic avocados and coconut oil is not cheap, especially if you need to do it 3 times a week and you know you can’t save an avocado once mashed.

Which ever route you take, remember consistency is key, one time use does not net results, and no results are instant.

“Home remadies are great, but time consuming ,messy and not any cheaper  or better that a good product ready to use”

STRESS REDUCTION IS ESSENTIAL
Stress magnifies hair loss. It is important to reduce stress as much as possible. Find your stress reducer. Here are a few of my favorite ways to stop stressing….
  • Take a walk in nature, or dig in the garden. I call it “dirt therapy”
  • Meditation
  • Exercise of any kind
  • Ax throwing or break rooms: these new places had me a bit skeptical, but there is something fun about getting a hammer and breaking stuff
  • Laugh! definitely the best stress reducer

Why does it matter which hair color your stylist uses?

Why does it matter which hair color your stylist uses?
April 10, 2018
Most people don’t really consider what is in their hair color. Some don’t even know the brand their stylist uses. The right brand of haircoloring should be like “The Fountain of Youth” for your hair. It can make your hair shining, vibrant, and radiant!

At Salon U, I have always been extremely picky about my brands and especially the ingredients in them.

The other day as I was training a young stylist, I was explaining, what is in our color and why that is important.
Framesi color has:
  • Highly refined dye molecules
  • Less than 2% ammonia to open the cuticle
  • A base of creamy coconut oil
Because the dye molecules are so Nano small Framesi uses a lower percentage of ammonia than most colors. (Other brands can use as much as 30% pew!).

Ammonia is still the safest way to open the cuticle, but you don’t want to blast it open, the cuticle is after all the protective outer layer of the hair.

Some other brands have dye molecules that are so large they need that high of ammonia to get the color inside to the cortex, (that is the inside of the hair where color lives). Framesi also nestles their color in a creamy coconut oil base. Coconut reduces protein loss when you color hair. Hair is basically protein so this is huge!
So essentially, Framesi colors are gentler on the hair and they condition as they color. Framesi also has Framcolor Eclectic which contains no ammonia at all. It uses an encapsulation technology that helps get the color into the hair, not on top of it, so it last longer than most ammonia free colors.

What happened next, totally validated everything I just explained to my stylist.

My client, whom I was rinsing her colour at the time, piped up. She said, “You know That explains a lot to me, before I came to this salon, I remember my hair always felt tacky after colour. It also never really looked natural, it was dull too. Then it would always fade to a weird brassy colour. Since I have been coming here, my hair feels so good. It looks so shining and it never fades to a strange color. I also remember, that my Husband used to say, “EW your hair smells like you just got it colored!” He never says that now.” This client also told us she was sitting in the doctor’s office and a complete stranger complemented her hair. She said that had never happened to her before she started coming to SALONU, now it happens all the time. The best hair color definitely will make a difference in your hair. We choose Framesi, it is simply the best, so should you!

Towel Truth. For Love of Microfiber!

3/1/2018

As stylists, we are always prescribing the best products for our client’s hair. We want you to use what we use so that you can achieve the professional results that we get. We recommend the perfect shampoo and conditioner for your hair and scalp. The best styling products to get that perfect look. But there are more than products to help keep your hair in tip top shape. One thing we feel that is really important is the towel you use after shampooing. At SalonU, we only use microfiber towels on our client’s hair.

Why microfiber? Microfiber has a lot of benefits over a cotton or terry towel. Let’s look at what happens when you shampoo your hair in the shower. First, you are probably using hot water, I don’t know too many people who prefer a cold shower. Hot water swells the cuticle of the hair.  Anytime the cuticle is open, damage can occur. Scrubbing your hair with a cotton towel roughs up the cuticle even more, I can imagine the ends splitting at the mere thought. NEVER scrub your wet hair with a towel, any towel.
Too much friction not only roughs up the cuticle, but can also cause frizziness. Gently squeeze the moisture from your hair and then wrap it up turban style. Give it 5-10 minutes for the moisture to be absorbed. A micro fiber towel is gentler on the hair and absorbs water quicker. This means less blow dry time and less damaged hair. You can do your make up while your hair is wrapped. A microfiber towel also stays in a turban better, a cotton towel can fall off, and that’s annoying. Curly hair? Micro fiber towels are a must have. Less moisture, less damage, less frizz, and curls stay nicer. We recommend that you comb your hair when wet, with a leave in conditioner or prep spray. We LOVE Framesi Primer 11 intense! Scrunch and squeeze curls with your microfiber towel, then wrap up your hair in your towel. Air dry or diffuse for perfect curls. Straight hair? Same routine, mist on a prep spray Framesi regular Primer 11 is our fav. (totally weightless, for even the finest hair). Comb and then wrap in your towel.  Apply styling products before drying. So be kind to your mane, switch to micro fiber. You will notice a difference.
