A classic is timeless - lasting and forever. That may sound a bit redundant, but all of these words describe a haircut that has remained popular for 100 years! The BOB!

Other words to describe this iconic cut are powerful and precise. This cut has a strong geometric shape and definitely makes a statement.

How did the BOB haircut get it’s name?

Picture
Where did this haircut originate? How did it get its name? How did it get its name? Historically, in the early 1900s, Western women did not cut their hair. The wore it up. Hence the name "Hairdresser." Hair was dressed up, not cut. To bob off your hair was to cut it. Only young girls, actresses and advanced, fashionable women dared to "bob" off their hair. This style was not considered respectable.

COCO CHANEL said, "Cut your hair and change your life."

But right around WWI that changed. It was a necessity for women engaged in work in factories during the war. It was unsafe to have long hair that could get caught in machinery.
It is rumored that COCO CHANEL saw a young women walking down a Paris street with her hair BOBBED off and thought it looked smashing, so she headed to a barber and had her hair lopped off!
She is quoted as saying "Cut your hair and change your life."

In the 1920s the “Bob” became all the rage, and lines could be found outside barber shops with women waiting to “bob” off their hair.

What social significance does the BOB represent?

Despite its popularity, it was still considered shocking to cut your hair. Only forward thinking, independent women "bobbed" off their hair. Today, one hundred years later, the bob hairstyle is more popular than ever, and women are speaking their minds.

Women today feel empowered and strong, just like the bob cut! There are more female role models and we are addressing previously suppressed issues. The “ME TOO” movement created a torrent of women speaking out for the first time. I predict that in 2020, the roaring twenties will return and women will once again roar. A female president? YES! And she will wear a bob!
